The legend of Snowflake
@ Joseph Landry & Vendegnome Press
A long time ago, far away near the North Pole the Legend began...
It was December 24th late in the evening. Huddled under the boughs of a spreading pine, Flossy gave birth to her first fawn. The baby’s father Moechum paced fervently. ” Is he born? Is it.... is the baby healthy? ” He asked. Yes dear,” answered Flossy. “A healthy baby boy.” A light snow began to fall as the proud parents debated a name. ” Snowflake, ” said Moechum. Let’s call him Snowflake. ” Flossy wanted to call him Miracle but she agreed Snowflake was a better name for a baby deer. The young parents were proudly tending their newborn infant when Moechum bounded to his feet; he thought he could smell man on the tundra.
Flossy tried to convince him that he was wrong; after all, this was Christmas Eve. Suddenly, with 3 loud thunder like claps, the silence of the night was shattered and Moechum fell to the ground. It can’t be, thought Flossy, but it was, hunters. She reached over to touch Moechum but it was already too late.
Flossy knew if she were to save her baby she would have to distract the hunters. With that she bounded across the tundra. It worked .She heard the claps of thunder echo behind her as the hunters followed in pursuit. Instantly not even a breeze moved across the land. As Flossy lay dying she looked to the star of Bethlehem and prayed for a miracle. Snowflake continued to lie sleeping under the boughs not knowing he was orphaned.
As the hunters carried away Moechum and Flossy they completely over looked tiny Snowflake. But Heaven had not over-looked Snowflake that night. The winds began to blow as a blizzard made its way across the Arctic landscape. The spirits of Flossy and Moechum began to glow from the heavens and a strange event took place. The sky filled with light and rainbows of color danced across the night sky. The Great Spirit of the Tundra awoke from her winter sleep to witness the spectacle.
The voice of Moechum echoed in the wind saying, oh great Nanook please find my son and take him to Santa Claus.
He was born just hours ago and needs to be cared for. He’ll surely die in this cold.” Hearing his plea Nanook summoned the spirits of the Arctic and asked them to help find Snowflake. Within moments Nanook made her way across the icescape to a lone pine. Huddled under the branches was a newborn fawn. The lights in the sky began to dance around the tree. Nanook could hardly believe her eyes; the newborn was growing antlers, not just normal ones, but, antlers, which glowed as though fueled by the lights in the sky. Nanook realized instantly that this baby was special. She carefully placed Snowflake on a sled of branches and began the long journey across the Arctic ice field to the North Pole. Morning broke and Santa was returning from his Christmas visits. His trusty elf Pete had already begun the task of compiling next year’s list. One year’s visit was scarcely over and another had to be begun.
“All these names and addresses!” Pete felt the task would soon become impossible. ” Things will work out,” said Santa. ”
We’ll find a way to make sure we visit everyone.” Impossible! ” Cried Pete.
Pete, you must learn to smile and not look at things so darkly. Enjoy your job more, my little Black Pete.” Unbeknownst to Santa his miracle was making its way to the North Pole. It was now Boxing Day and Santa was resting. Pete had already started the list of good boys and girls when a knock came upon the door.
Santa’s wife Anaya answered the door. Nanook entered and explained the situation to Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
Anaya began to make the baby comfortable when she discovered that hundreds of tiny silver snowflakes lined the fawns’ sled. Nanook explained that every time the Northern Lights danced across the sky, Snowflakes antlers would glow, and every snowflake that touched them turned to silver. Santa thought this was wonderful.
Nanook left. Her job was done. Mr. and Mrs. Claus began their task of bringing up the orphan.
It wasn’t long before the Vendagnome, or as you say elves, learned of the magic of the silver snowflakes.
They discovered that if you hung one on your Christmas tree, the warmth of the Memories of Christmas Past, the Love of Christmas Present and the Dreams and Hope of Christmas Future would suddenly fill your home. These special snowflakes also sent wonderful beams of light dancing across the sky on Christmas Eve.
It didn’t take Santa or Pete very long to realize that this was the answer to their dreams. A way to help guide Santa to each home on Christmas Eve.
From now on, he could follow the lights across the sky knowing that below each one was a snowflake and a child.
The gift of love that Flossy and Moechum gave their son became a gift of love for all children everywhere.
